Quotes from candidate’s website related to cycling and active transportation (accessed Sept 2018):“If elected I will work to ensure we have:

  1. Well-maintained streets and sidewalks that are accessible for everyone
  2. Affordable reliable transit that is comfortable and sustainable
  3. A citywide bike network with protected bike lanes
    • “Winnipeg must build a safe, citywide bike network to meet the challenges of climate change, address the high cost of maintaining roads, reduce traffic congestion and provide more transportation options.”
    • “Cycling is a healthy way to get around the city and we know more Winnipeggers would choose to cycle if we had a safe and connected community network. By expanding our cycling network, we will give people more options for travelling, keep cars off the road and help protect our environment for future generations.”
    • Winnipeg has more than 7,000 lane-kilometres of roads, 145 bridges and underpasses and approximately 400 kilometres of bike lanes. Most of the bike lanes are either off-road paths or unprotected painted lanes on city streets.
    • “Winnipeg is woefully behind other Canadian cities in building infrastructure that can safely accommodate cars, bikes and pedestrians. Four years ago, the city set a goal of making cycling and walking attractive alternatives to driving – yet very little has been accomplished by the current city council. Residents deserve better.
    • If elected, Brandon will advocate for the completion of the Wolseley to West Alexander Corridor to provide better cycling and walking infrastructure in the Daniel McIntyre ward, including:
      • Safe north-south route along Ruby and Banning streets, with controlled crossings at the major intersections
      • Extension of St. Matthews route east towards downtown
      • Designated east-west route on either Wolseley or Westminster avenues

From Vote Winnipeg 2018 (Winnipeg Free Press) accessed 2 Oct 2018:

Q: “What should Winnipeg’s plan be for the future of public and active transit?” “I believe we must work towards making public transportation the preferred transportation option for Winnipeggers. We must increase investment in operation funding to transit to increase frequency, improve reliability and affordability of transit. I will work to reverse the 2018 25-cent fare increase.

I also want to work towards a safe and connected bike network. Residents in Daniel McIntyre want to have improved and safe bike infrastructure including protected bike lanes so they can access all neighbourhoods of the city in a safe, healthy and environmentally friendly way.”

Q: “What is your position on reopening Portage and Main to pedestrians?” “I have not been campaigning on the issue of Portage and Main. I fear this issue has become a distraction from many other important issues facing our city, and the decision of City Council to hold a referendum on this issue is unnecessarily polarizing. Ultimately, however the referendum vote turns out, I will work towards improving accessibility for all residents to every part of downtown, while maintaining safe traffic flow.”

The candidate completed the 2018 all-candidate environmental survey: A coalition of Winnipeg Environmental Organizations compiled questions for an all-candidate (Mayoral and Councilor) survey with questions relating to the environment, including AT.
