Quotes from the candidate’s social media related to active transportation and public transit (accessed 2 Oct 2018):

  • “The Transcona Trail should be extended towards the downtown area. It provides a great route for bicycle and walking traffic without causing a problem or congestion with regular vehicle traffic. The use of bike lanes is important but we need to do this without detracting the flow of existing traffic as the amount of cars increases with all the new developments. It is frequently used and definitely something to build on.”
  • “I am all for progress, and anything that can move traffic and people along a faster pace, is moving in a positive direction. That being said, I’m not sure that the amount of money being spent on Rapid Transit is the best allocation of funds. In my opinion, if these funds are going to be spent, and if this project is going to happen regardless, I would much prefer to see an LRT built. They are faster and far more efficient for moving people. Yes, the cost is more, but you would be getting a much better system.
In the here and now, a possible larger use of express buses could move people faster to and from downtown areas. Less stops, and faster travel times with buses that already exist, on roads that already exist. It becomes a smaller form of rapid transit.
Feeder buses to areas and developments that do not have transit servicing them now are necessary. The use of full size buses is not necessary for this purpose as many times you will see buses with few or no passengers. I would suggest using smaller buses to service these areas, which will reduce the expense to operate these routes. Run these routes to Kildonan Place where people can branch off from there. Increase the amount of smaller buses in peak times if the amount of people and need of use warrant this, again creating a faster flow of moving people.”

From Winnipeg Votes 2018 (CBC) accessed 18 Oct 2018:

Q: “Will you work with other wards/municipalities to help improve active transportation links across the city?”  Right now, the Transcona Trail ends at Costco. It’s a trail that’s used a lot, whether by people walking or by bicycle. The simple fact that it’s used a lot means it would be a much more usable trail if we expanded it. To expand it to other areas would be a great idea.”

Q: “What can be done to improve transit service in the area?”  “There’s areas of Transcona — new developments — that don’t have a lot of service, or no service at all. So, what I would like to do is run feeder busses to those areas. At the same time, take it a step further, and not use full-size busses. There’s no point in running a full-size bus when there’s either no one on the bus or very few people on the bus.”

The candidate completed the 2018 all-candidate environmental survey: A coalition of Winnipeg Environmental Organizations compiled questions for an all-candidate (Mayoral and Councilor) survey with questions relating to the environment, including AT.
