Bike Winnipeg has passed the following position statements and endeavors to integrate them into our actions and recommendations. Position statements are developed through our Policy Committee and passed by our board of directors.
Bike Winnipeg Position on Mandatory Helmet Legislation : Bike Winnipeg does not support the introduction of a mandatory helmet law for adults. We have serious concerns that a mandatory law would reduce the number of adults riding bicycles in Winnipeg and therefore reduce the safety of all bicyclists as well as the health benefits of riding bicycles.
Taxi Cabs in Diamond Lanes Bike Winnipeg believes that 1) Handi-Transit Vehicles should be allowed to use diamond lanes 2) Handi-Transit operators should receive training on sharing diamond lanes with people on bikes; 3) Taxi cabs should not be permitted to use diamond lanes.
Traffic Control Measures Bike Winnipeg will identify and promote traffic control measures that: 1) Reduce the frequency and severity of collisions involving motor vehicles and bicycles, 2) enhance the convenience of cycling, and 3) increase the mode share of cycling.
Neighbourhood Greenways Neighbourhood Greenways with traffic calming features and a posted speed limit of 30 km/hour should be developed on selected residential streets in neighbourhoods throughout Winnipeg.
Vision Zero Bike Winnipeg encourages all levels of government to embrace the Vision Zero approach. Vision Zero began as a Swedish road safety initiative in 1997. It can be summarized in one sentence. Human life and health are paramount values and can never be exchanged for other benefits within the society.
